Le mot hébreu seraphim est un nom pluriel dérivé du verbe saraph, qui signifie « Les flamboyants ». Dans la Bible, un séraphin, un serpent « brûlant » du désert, est un ange décrit par Isaïe avec trois paires d’ailes.
